Welcome!!!

Tuesday, December 8, 2009

Welcome to my blog! My name is Corey Roach, and I am currently a freshman at Rider University. My major is Behavioral Neuroscience with a focus on Pre-Med. I have a profound interest in Psychology and Biology, and I am fascinated by the study of gender. My interest in these fields influence most of the things that I do, and this blog serves as a reflection of how I apply my interests to the many aspects of my life. There is nothing I want more than success, and I tirelessly pursue it every day. I am an intelligent, determined, passionate individual, and I express those qualities in everything that I do. I devote myself to my responsibilities, and I am always looking for new places where I can apply my work ethic and skills to gather experience within my field of study. I invite you to explore my blog to gather an understanding of the activities that I participate in, while getting a glimpse of who I am in real life.

Letter of Intent

Monday, December 7, 2009

Currently I am seeking a paid internship in a clinical setting, hopefully emphasizing psychiatric medicine, or a paid internship involving gaining experience with psychological therapy. I feel as though acquiring an internship at this time would help me advance myself, and allow me to apply the skills that I have developed to a worthwhile experience. My four years at Rider is to prepare me to properly assimilate myself into medical school. I am reinforcing all of my skills while becoming a well rounded person in order to ensure that I am confident in my abilities. It is my belief that it will be the confidence in my abilities that will determine the success I achieve in medical school school. This blog was made to announce my current activities, describe my past experiences, and showcase my accomplishments, all while showing my visitors who I am as a person. My visitors are encouraged to explore all of the links on my page in order to collect more information about my interests and activities.

About Me

Sunday, December 6, 2009

I am a very outgoing person, and love trying new things. I am determined and goal oriented, but know how to balance my work with other aspects of my life. I aim to eventually obtain a doctorate in psychiatry, and assume a career in psychotherapy. Since I was a young child I knew I wanted to be a doctor, and have never thought about any other profession. My fascination with psychology materialized when I took my first psych class in high school. That class and its teacher had a deep impact on me, and made me realize that I wanted to work with psychology.

The passion that I transfer into everything in my life draws its potency from the devotion I express towards it. I love my field of study, and avidly read medical and psychology journals under my own accord. I view community service as a form of salvation because nothing in my life makes me feel a better sense of worth like community service. I devote a good portion of my time to community service every month through organizations that I am a member of. Tennis is another one of my passions. I have played tennis for five years now, and when I played competitively I trained countless hours to keep a competitive edge.

I still express my devotion to my passions every day. I participated in the intramural tennis season, where I made it to the semifinals, and still practice whenever possible at the South Jersey Sports Club. Currently, I am a member of Rider Psychology Club which partakes in a lot of community service. So far we have made Thanksgiving Diner baskets and handmade blankets for poor people. I recently became a member of Circle K, which is a national organization that advocates community service, leadership, and character. We recently made two-hundred peanut butter sandwiches for the Trenton Soup Kitchen.

Seneca High School

Saturday, December 5, 2009

I did a lot at Seneca High School, and truly got the most out of my high school experience. I was the president of the Renaissance Club, the president of the Environmental Club, a Secretary of the Latin Club, and the co-captain on the Varsity Tennis Team. I was also a member of the National Honor Society. In the Renaissance Club I supervised more than half of the fundraising and school spirit activities in the school. In the Environmental Club I coordinated with other organizations, and raised enough money to save five-hundred acres of rainforest through the Rainforest Alliance. As the co-captain of the Varsity Tennis Team I helped run team exercises with the Junior Varsity Team, while advocating team spirit before our important matches. I am a proud alumni of Seneca High School, and I am very proud of my accomplishments there.

The Saint Vincent de Paul Society

Friday, December 4, 2009

The time I spend volunteering at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop in Medford New Jersey continues to yield some of the most meaningful experiences in my life. At the thrift shop I feel as though I am an active citizen, and doing my share of giving back and helping the community. I assist with food drives for the poor, provide customer services, and work in the back sorting and organizing donated goods. The most meaningful thing that I remember doing there was dropping off Christmas Gifts to disadvantaged children; the happiness that I brought to those young children was truely unforgettable. I hope to have more genuine experiences like that one in the future at St. Vincents.

Willingboro Veterinary Clinic

Thursday, December 3, 2009

The internship at the Willingboro Veterinary Clinic was a very educational experience. While there I shadowed a veterinary technician, and became acquainted with the diagnostic processes that they use to determine the physical status of the animals. I learned how to prepare and administer diagnostic tests, how to recognize certain physical ailments, and how to read the machines that monitor vital bodily functions. Although I was working with animals, the internship at the WVC allowed me gain experience within a sterile clinical setting. By the end of that internship I felt very comfortable in that kind of environment.

The Horatio Alger Association

Wednesday, December 2, 2009

The Horatio Alger Association for Distinguished Americans is an organization of individuals that have faced considerable adversity yet have achieved a high degree of success. I was a 2009 Horatio Alger Scholar, and it was a great honor to be inducted into the organization. Out of forty thousand applicants only 108 were chosen. Scholars were chosen under the premise that they have not only achieved a great deal of academic success in the face of adversity, but in the meantime managed to participate in a number of extracurricular activities. At this point in my life, I feel as though this was my most prestigious award. In order to become a Horatio Alger Alumni it is necessary to graduate from your four year college. I know that I am going to be a Horatio Alger Alumni because I want to help represent this great organization.

Academic Works & Readings

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

To the left you can find my Resume and Biography. You can also find some of my academic essays that I wrote during my EOP summer and first semester at Rider University. The first essay is a comparison between Nietzsche's and Sartre's views on morality that I am considerably proud of. The second essay is an essay I did during the summer on Native Americans. I was specifically proud of the compositional creativity needed to write that essay. The third essay was another essay from my first semester, and it is an analysis of biblical creation stories. I like this essay because it is on religion, which I am fond of learning about. To the left you can also find the link to an online organization where I read up on medical news and journals.

Educational Opportunity Program

Monday, November 30, 2009

The EOP (Educational Opportunity Program) was a program designed to fund deserving students that would otherwise have no chance of financing their college experience at Rider. It is a good program because it ensures that the people that should be educated have the opportunity to do so. I am very passionate about the concept that EOP represents. It represents achieving success, capturing fire, in the face of adversity. The summer session's purpose was to get all the EOP students in academic shape and assimilated into the college way of life. I am proud to be an EOP student, and view my fellow 47 EOP students as a family. The EOP summer was my first college experience, and I am happy that I got a jump start on the college experience.
